Psychological experiences of women undergoing elective egg freezing: A scoping review
Elective egg freezing is increasingly used to safeguard reproductive potential against reproductive ageing, yet the psychological experiences of women undergoing the procedure remain incompletely understood. This scoping review mapped and synthesised evidence on women's psychological experiences throughout the elective egg freezing process. Following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, six electronic databases were searched, and 29 studies were included. Women experienced distinct but interconnected psychological challenges before, during, and after treatment. Uncertainty surrounding future motherhood and treatment outcomes, alongside concerns about relationships and financial costs, contributed to psychological burden. However, elective egg freezing also provided hope, reassurance, and a sense of control over reproductive timing. Many women regarded their frozen oocytes as a backup rather than something they necessarily intended to use. These findings highlight the need for appropriate information and psychological support throughout the elective egg freezing journey to facilitate informed reproductive decision-making.
